It seems the American mindset has been brain dead for many years and the Progressive and Democrat parties have instigated its demise. There is nothing more unnatural and evil than telling people their circumstances are the result of a selfish and uncompassionate populace and NOT the effect of their own doing.
Not only does this ideology push the philosophy of Determinism it keeps people poor and stupid longer. This goal of creating servants to a bloated and ever expanding Monster State is what horror movies are founded upon. What is a Monster State? Joseph Campbell shares his definition in the Power of Myth by stating,
Man should not be in the service of society, society should be in the service of man. When man is in the service of society, you have a monster state, and that’s what is threatening the world at this minute.
But, here we are America, serving Society and feeding the machine at the loss of individual significance and creating a proverbial nightmare.
What is compassion? Is it telling an individual who happens to be in a hostile relationship that it is not their fault they are being mistreated leading them to seek no improvement for their circumstances that results in no change toward the good?
Or, is compassion telling the victimized individual there circumstances are the result of their own doing and where the problem exists, so does the remedy? We cannot improve a situation until we learn to advance ourselves and we cannot do that if we are convinced that our self-created purgatory is the result of other people’s selfishness and by changing THEM we change the situation.
I was in a mildly oppressive relationship in my late twenties. He was hot as molten lava and could play a mean guitar which made him even more attractive, God help me. He was not a bad person; we just did not bring out the best in one another. Whenever things became too volatile, I would get in my car and drive. During one particular road trip at 3:00 in the morning, the song Already Gone by the Eagles came on the radio. I remember being disappointed. It is a good song, but I would have much preferred Take It to the Limit.
As the song played, Glenn Frey’s voice began to sound louder than the chaotic voices in my head. And then the words came.
“So often times it happens that we live our lives in chains and we never even know we have the key.”
Thank You, God. Thank you Spiritual Angel Maria. Thank you, Eagles. Thank you, Inner Strength and Will. That night, as hard as it was to accept responsibility, I moved on. Eventually, I developed better relationships and a better understanding about myself.
Holding yourself accountable is never easy and does not feel compassionate or good at the initial discovery phase, but it is the only way anything is going to change. If you are poor and stupid and have been for a while, then maybe the people telling you that government is not going to solve your problems and you are the key to your own happiness are more compassionate, realistic and reasonable.
And, maybe the ones who claim to care about you by telling you that your circumstances are the result of selfish rich people, Republicans, and Conservatives are only after your weakened and victimized soul who has no interest in you as a unique and extraordinary individual and prefer you to remain a tool for their agenda.
Beware of politicians and their false claim of compassion. I am reminded of a scene in the 1985 cult vampire classic, Fright Night. Our victim, Edward ‘Evil’ Thompson, is a misunderstood and lonely teenager who confronts our charismatically charming Vampire, Jerry. Sensing the young man’s vulnerability and weakness, Jerry convinces Edward he cares about him and sympathizes with his adolescent plight just before he sucks the last once of humanity from his veins. In the end, the young man is turned into the vampire’s sycophant.
Is that compassion or is that simply a means to an end and power redistributed from the servant to a monster state?
James Allen wrote in The Path to Prosperity,
“What you are so is your world. (“What you are the world is”-Krishnamurti). Everything in the universe is resolved into your own inward experience. It matters little what is without, for it is all a reflection of your own state of consciousness. It matters everything what you are within, for everything without will be mirrored and colored accordingly.”
Now, I know we have a current sitting President who believes the exact opposite and along the lines of Karl Marx who wrote in Preface to the Critique of Political Economy,
“It is not the consciousness of men that determines their being, but, on the contrary, their social being that determines their consciousness.”
Does society create the man or does man create his society? Is he a victim of his circumstances or is his circumstances the victim of his consciousness? I suppose we as individuals must seek out our own persoanl truths through trial, error, and Eagle songs.
Since no one looks forward to taking responsibility for their own poverty and stupidity, the Democrats and the sucking sound you hear as individuality is drained dry will continue for years to come. Until America becomes awakened to the knowledge that they are the creators of their own life responsible and capable of self-empowerment through self-accountability, we will continue on the path to Compassionate Politicians acting like Vampires and their Victims looking like Zombies.
